Project Development in Guinea

Power:On provided support to two non-competing consortiums preparing offers for different lots in a minigrid tender managed by Guinea’s Rural Electrification Agency (AGER) and the Ministry of Energy.

We carried out field visits to assess electricity demand in the villages to be electrified and performed a broader macro analysis of Guinea’s economy to provide more depth to our demand assessments and growth forecasts.

We also and prepared a note on 3 measures of women vulnerability in the regions targeted by the tender. We recommended such a note because we know that gender equality must be actively promoted in this kind of project. When a gender neutral approach is preferred, the benefits indeed turn out to be mostly captured by men. To ensure electricity access brings social progress and equal opportunity to all, it is important to address such challenges right from the project design phase. Moreover, women often are the best entrepreneurs in town! Not making sure they take advantage of the full benefits of electricity would be bad business. Developers and operators need to make sure they are not left behind.
